Hi, I'm Molly, currently living the the Pacific NW, from San Francisco. J and I are thinking of moving to the UK, and I for one, like to live near the sea.
Brighton looks close to London for short trips as well.
From the earlier posts I've read, bnh sounds like a bit like Santa Cruz, CA - a tourist town that locals not associated with tourism both love and hate.
Besides researcing what kind of town it is, I was curious about how much the cost of living was, if you do not mind me asking.
Thanks.
Molly

Re: Greetings, intro...
Wed, January 28, 2004 - 5:04 PMI'm a big fan, though I don't live there anymore. If you're going to live in the UK, Brighton is one of the best places to live.
- sea / beach culture (though too cold to swim more than 1 or 2 months a year)
- quickish to get to London
- good cafe / club scene
- 2 universities, so a lot of students and cultural stuff
- big gay community
That basically makes it a Creative Class (www.creativeclass.org/ ) kind of place. -

Fri, January 30, 2004 - 7:09 PMCreative Class. yeah, that's us. I think we'll be looking for a 2 bedroom apartment, or similar lo-rentish dwelling. Being a college town is something of a plus.
Thanks!

Re: Greetings, intro...
Thu, January 29, 2004 - 7:34 AMI've been here for about 6 years now, and I'm not planning to move out any time soon.
Cost of living-wise, it's probably a lot more expensive than most other places, mostly due to the fact that it's got a large influx from London. Pints of Guinness (don't drink much else ;) vary from about 2.50 to 3 quid now, depending on where you go. House prices are quite silly - not sure what the average is, but renting a room is generally above 280 pcm, and more likely to be above 300. Again, depends where you are.
I think the thing I like about Brighton is that it's very multi-faceted - there are the popular mainstream bits, and the totemic alternative bits, and there are all the bits you would never notice unless you lived here for a while. Even though I don't really go out clubbing any more, I'm still finding new things to do all over the place.
Oh, we've also got the highest percentage of Jedi knights here, apparently:

Re: Greetings, intro...
Tue, October 5, 2004 - 10:58 AMI lived on Temple Street in Brighton in the eighties. I moved away to Chichester and then came back to Hove on 3rd Avenue.
I'm a Brit, but have now lived in Santa Cruz for 10 years, Portland for six months, Tucson for a year and now I'm in Providence, Rhode Island.
Molly, if you are from Portland you'll be used to the weather in Brighton - grey and wet - your analogy with Santa Cruz ends there - Brighton is NOTHING like Santa Cruz!
I enjoyed my time in Brighton.

Fri, March 17, 2006 - 1:46 AMHi Molly.
If you're coming to the UK, Brighton's a fab little city. Like the others said, it is pretty expensive, in fact not much cheaper than London anymore. But the sea and the people and the culture more than makes up for it. Plus, you can jump on a train and be in london in an hour. My boyfriend commutes up there every day to work.
Let us know if you decide to make the leap!
